The simple version
Lithography is the process of printing extremely tiny chip patterns onto wafers. It is the most famous equipment chokepoint because the most advanced machines are extraordinarily hard to build.
What the technology does
- The tool uses light, optics, masks, chemicals, and precision stages to transfer patterns onto silicon.
- DUV is used for many mature and some advanced processes. EUV is required for the most advanced high-volume logic chips.
- Lithography performance affects how small, dense, and efficient chips can become.
Market scale
- ASML is the lithography benchmark and reported about EUR28 billion in 2024 net sales.
- ASML is the only EUV supplier. Nikon and Canon remain relevant in parts of DUV and specialty lithography.
- A single advanced lithography tool can cost hundreds of millions of dollars and depends on a deep supplier network.
China angle
SiCarrier and SMEE are the domestic names to watch. SMEE delivery claims have improved, but sales are hard to read because it is not publicly listed. The gap is not simply one machine; it is optics, light sources, stages, control systems, resists, masks, service, and fab integration.
How we got here
Lithography has always set the pace for Moore's Law. EUV took decades to commercialize and became a geopolitical chokepoint once the most advanced chips depended on it.
- 1980s-2000s
Optical lithography improves through shorter wavelengths and better precision.
- 2010s
EUV finally reaches commercial high-volume manufacturing after a long development cycle.
- 2020s
Export controls block China from EUV and restrict advanced DUV access.
- Next phase
Watch credible DUV shipments, component localization, and actual fab evidence.
