The simple version
Lidar and radar help machines understand distance and motion. Lidar uses light; radar uses radio waves. The chips behind them process signals and help decide what the machine is seeing.
What the technology does
- Radar is strong in bad weather and is already common in cars. Lidar can provide higher-resolution distance information.
- The chip challenge is mostly analog, RF, signal processing, reliability, and cost-down.
- A sensor is only useful if the perception software and vehicle or robot system can interpret it safely.
Market scale
- Infineon, NXP, TI, Analog Devices, and Mobileye-linked systems are useful global reference points.
- The lidar company market is smaller and more volatile than the AI chip market, but China has unusually strong application demand from EV makers and has pushed lidar into passenger vehicles faster than most markets.
- The business question is whether sensors become cheap enough and reliable enough for mass deployment.
China angle
Hesai and RoboSense are globally visible Chinese lidar leaders; Seyond is another ecosystem name to track. Calterah is a radar chip name to watch. The nuance is that China's lidar position is stronger than its broader radar/RF chip position.
How we got here
Automotive radar has been around for years in driver assistance. Lidar moved from expensive research hardware toward commercial vehicles and robots as costs fell and Chinese EV makers used it as a feature battleground.
- 2000s-2010s
Radar becomes part of advanced driver assistance systems.
- 2016-2020
Autonomous driving hype brings lidar into the spotlight.
- 2021-2024
Chinese EV makers push lidar into consumer vehicles faster than many global peers.
